A Time For Reflection
The Morning Call (Allentown, PA), December 25, 2007
This is the time of year traditionally used for focusing on reflections and aspirations. We look back and summarize. We also look ahead and set new goals.
I just finished reading Eat, Pray, Love (Penguin Books, 2006), the popular memoir that has spent several months on The New York Times best-seller list. In this book, Elizabeth Gilbert describes her yearlong soul-searching journey abroad and the insights gained. Liz’s quest for pleasure, devotion, and balance is exquisitely portrayed – as is the range of emotion that accompanies it – and serves as an example of personal growth achieved through reflection.
Among other things, we learn from her experience that humans seek to understand their purpose in the world and they want a connection with someone or something greater than themselves. These are common themes to which many readers will relate.
I wish you all a happy and healthy holiday season and a great 2008!
