Smile, It's Springtime!

The Morning Call (Allentown, PA), May 16, 2006

Spring is here and this is a reason for us to be joyful.  During this season of growth we are blessed with warmer weather, longer days, chirping birds, and blossoming flowers.

Gardening is a seasonal activity enjoyed by many, and it has benefits on a smaller scale as well.  Richard Carlson, Ph.D., author of Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff…and It’s all Small Stuff (1997, New York: Hyperion), states that “…nurturing a plant offers us an excellent opportunity to practice unconditional love.”

Carlson advises, “Select a plant, indoor or outdoor, that you will see every day.  Practice taking care of and loving that plant as if it were your baby…

“After a short while, you’ll be able to extend your loving-kindness beyond your plant…Your plant can be a wonderful teacher – showing you the power of love”.
